The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play began in 1633. In the middle of the Thirty Years War, after months of suffering and death from the plague, the Oberammergauers swore an oath that they would perform the "Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ" every ten years. In 1634, they fulfilled their pledge for the first time on a stage they put up in the cemetery above the fresh graves of the plague victims. In the year 2010, the Community of Oberammergau will perform the Passion Play, they have preserved throughout the centuries for the 41th time.
Independent Tour Itinerary
DAY 1: Frankfurt - Rothenburg
Depart from Frankfurt for a picturesque drive through the Spessart mountains to
Würzburg, on the banks of the river Main. Continue on the Romantic Road to
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany’s well-preserved "Jewel of the Middle Ages"
with its ramparts, city gates, town hall and Jakobskirche (church) with an altar
by the famous wood-carver Tilman Riemenschneider. Upon arrival in Rothenburg, a
taxi will take you to your hotel. In the afternoon or evening please join the
city walk with a local guide or the historic Night Watchman in Rothenburg.
Overnight at Hotel Spitzweg or similar.
DAY 2: Rothenburg - Oberammergau
After breakfast, a taxi will meet you at your hotel and take you to the bus
stop. Your coach drives along the Romantic Road passing such picturesque places
as Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen, with high gabled houses and cobbled-stone
streets. Via Augsburg, a metropolis during the Roman times and famous for old
trade dynasties during the Middle Ages, and the Bavarian Capital Munich you
reach Oberammergau in the evening. Overnight at hotel in Oberammergau or nearby
village incl. dinner at hotel or local restaurant.
DAY 3: Oberammergau/Passion Play
After breakfast, leisure time (free shuttle service in Oberammergau/Uterammergau/Ettal
only) local assistance, free entrance to Oberammergau Museum. Lunch
will be served in Oberammergau before the play begins. Admission ticket to the
Passion Play in the respective category* (incl. programme book) with dinner
during the play interval. Overnight at booked hotel.
DAY 4: Oberammergau - Munich
After breakfast, departure from Oberammergau to Munich where your tour ends at
approx. 11:00 a.m.

Please note: to the Passion Play Theatre
shuttle bus transfer only included in the price if hotel is located in the
village of Oberammergau , Uterammergau and Ettal. Hotel location (in all
categories) may vary depending on the performance date and could be in a village
nearby Oberammergau. We only guarantee hotel category (HC1 or HC2 or HC3 or HC4
or HC5 not the location - location will be confirmed at the time of
reservation)
In case of accommodation in a nearby village passengers can use local buses or
train from Euro 15 per person each way to get to the Passion Play Theatre. Bus
or train tickets can be purchased at the hotels.
